First of all apologies for using the 'Contact' facility for sending a message relating to the Poirot series. Am thrilled to find your site and it is great to see so much interest, especially in the divine art deco locations. I have a long association with the Midland Hotel in Morecambe whose entrance, lobby/reception (featuring the Eric Gill) and Rotunda Café (now a bar) were used. I note that you have been to the Lakes and will be posting soon. If any of your fans are interested, as an interim measure whilst I build my website which will feature the Midland heavily through its derelict years to the new refurbishment, I have set an Fb page paralleling the fortunes and misfortunes of the Midland (1933) and Ocean (1938 and features in the Jewel Theft at the Grand Metropolitan) Hotels. Grateful thanks to historian and author Douglas d'Enno for the history of the Ocean. The page can be found by following this link: www.facebook.com/pages/The-Midland-Hotel-Morecambe-Lancs/151864808197307
We are watching Poirot at the moment - Death on Nile but we always look at pics of The Midland Hotel - old and new.
I loved the hotel on sight - moved from over seas when I was small and grew up watching the hotel die a death. I was so excited to see it being used in a Poirot episode (I was 22) and when I found out developers and Friends had brought the hotel back to life, we have visited it a few times a year ever since. It's still an amazing Art Decco icon as we will support it as long as we can - hopefully, in a vintage 1932 MG one day - until then, we have to drive up in our forty year old classic. I tell all colleagues and family to visit too.
There is a fab little e-book called 'Across the Sea' and in it, there is a chapter called The Midland. Got to be the same hotel? JS as Poirot and The Midland - perfect!
If only Fry and Laurie in their Jeeves and Wooster hay-day had gone there too! Is it too late for J&W Revisited? I am sure there's still a 'Blanding's Goes to the Sea-side' episode that hasn't been written yet?
